The Dearly Departed

Went to see the new Martin Scorsese flick “The Departed” last night. Probably the best movie I’ve seen in a long while.

LD in the departed

I think MS’s greatest accomplishment here is that for a change Leo looks like a real adult and not a wind-up toy.

Jack Nicholson is Jack Nicholson and he’ll probably get the Oscar nod, but my money is on Mark Wahlberg. Mark WahlbergYep, the former Marky Mark shines here, chewing up dialog and stealing scene after scene. Worth the $10 buck admission.

I haven’t seen Wahlberg this good since Boogie Nights. I’m not exaggerating here, either. Apologies to all you I Heart Huckabee fans out there.

The flick is a remake of a Hong Kong action film and it does not disappoint. I thought it harkens back to old Hollywood westerns than anything else. Matt Damon is Leo’s counter here and he holds his own with the other big fish in the bowl. But as much fun as it is to hear Damon and Wahlberg spare with their dueling southy accents, this is JN and LD’s movie and their scenes crackle.

Speaking of accents, we caught the trailer for Blood Diamondand what kind of accent is Leo trying to do here? We may be in for a treat here. Not since Jon Voigt in Anaconda has there been a shittier accent.

I don’t know if this one is going to get Marty his statue (Damn, Flags of Our Fathers has Oscar winner all over it) but I think the nomination is in the bag.

For the locals, this was our first foray out to the Clifton Commons and we like the theater. Parking sucked though. It’s a mad house on Saturday and backing out of a spot there’s a 50/50 chance either you or someone else may be killed. However, it is genuine stadium seating, not the sloped floors that pass as such out here where Essex, Passaic and Bergen counties meet.

We’ll be back to this theater in the future but we’ll try to get there a bit earlier. Especially for movies like the Departed.
